Trainspotting is one of my favourite movies. It was so influentual not just in the way it was made but also in its use of music and its marketing, and its influence can still be seen today, just look at Channel 4's "Skins".
Anyone who says it promotes drug use is missing the point (and clearly hasnt seen it. It deals with the bleak subject with surprising moments of humour but certainly doesnt glamorise the choices of the characters.
Thats why I used it as my first "Classic film openings" in my blog The Blog of Lists
(which I only started yesterday so I hope you dont mind me posting that!)
